Veteran’s Day 2017 celebrations attracted local military personnel from across the county to the Royal British Legion on Thursday [21st June 2017].
Ex-servicemen and women of the Army, RAF, Navy and Royal Marines were honoured with gratitude by local dignitaries including Dr Lisa Cameron in her returned role as MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow.
Dr Cameron led proceedings again for the third year running and paid gratitude to the veterans and supporters who attended the event.
Speaking to the Veterans Dr Cameron said, “You are all heroes because you put your life on the line to protect our democracy.”
Dr Cameron announced that she will be attending the armed forces Parliamentary Scheme for Members of Parliament later this year starting with the experience of the Royal Navy.
Chairman of The Royal British Legion Eddie Hayes was presented with a plaque in recognition of the work of the Legion by Depute Provost Collette Stevenson in recognition of his work.
A special mention was given to local resident Mr George Gray from Stonehouse who, as well as being a veteran, is a former World Guiness Record holder for the most blood donated. Mr Gray received a British Empire Medal in recognition of his work in the community after being nominated by Dr Cameron. [Photo attached].

All fundraising was through Legion Scotland.
The local pipe band The Last of the Summer Wine Piping Group provided the ceremonial bagpiping.
