DR LISA CAMERON MP SUPPORTS CYCLING SAFETY
DR Lisa Cameron MP welcomed a call for review of traffic rules to prevent road traffic accidents.
Nearly two-thirds of motor vehicle collisions take place at junctions. This increases to three-quarters of collisions for people cycling.
British Cycling has called for motoring, walking and cycling organisations to support their proposal to update the Highway Code to create a simple rule for giving way when turning and to carry out further research into applying these rules at traffic signals.
The updated Highway Code would detail that ‘when turning at a junction, give way to people walking, cycling or driving who are going straight ahead.’
Dr Cameron said, “Cycling is excellent for families and for our health across Scotland and the UK.
“We must ensure that there are well marked cycle paths and that roads are safe for cyclists.
“I want to see everyone who can, maximising health gains via outdoor pursuits of walking and cycling wherever possible and we must ensure that these activities are as safe as they can be for all.”
